Biography

Calvin Henry Thomas was born to Jacob and Rebecca Lee Thomas in Salem, Ohio, on November 15, 1844. He attended the Salem public schools. During the Civil War he served with the Sixth Ohio Calvary from October 7, 1861 to August 7, 1865. He then attended Oberlin College. Calvin Thomas arrived in Greeley, Colorado in May 1870. He married Sophia Pauline Nickum in Salem, Ohio on April 8, 1874. He owned property in Greeley and later moved to the V Bar O Ranch located east of Eaton, Colorado in 1880. He was a member of the G.A.R. Calvin and Sophia Thomas had five children John Jacob, who died in childhood; Helen Mary; Myra Laura; Thurza Theda; and Dan Boone Lee. He died on May 3, 1921. Scope and Contents

Books along with other items were given to the library by Sarah Thomas, widow of Dan Thomas, c 1971, when the Thomas home near Ault was sold. William Southard of Greeley was the attorney. Correspondence about the gift is in the Archives office file.The file also contains a list of the books, most of which have not been cataloged. A list of the books is available upon request. This collection also contains over 700 etchings and watercolors by Myra Laura Thomas.
