Biography
Emeritus Professor Tyrus Hillway held a number of positions at the University of Northern Colorado from 1951 until his retirement in 1973, including Assoc. Prof. of Ed. (Admin. research); Asst. Prof. of Ed.; Prof. of Ed.; and Prof. of Higher Ed./Asst. to Pres.-Faculty. Tyrus Hillway was born on January 5, 1912 to William H. and Martha (Milbrett) Hillway in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He married Hazel Andrews on August 28, 1937; she died in 1996. Hillway received a bachelor's degree from Willamette University in 1934, a master's degree for the University of California in 1939, and a Ph.D. from Yale University in 1944. He served as president of Mitchell College in New London, Connecticut from 1946 to 1951. He then taught at the University of Northern Colorado from 1951 to 1973 and served as an assistant to UNC's president from 1966 to 1969. Hillway was the first recipient of the Distinguished Scholar Award at the University of Northern Colorado in 1972 and was a member of Sigma Chi. He served as a Fulbright at the University of Vienna, Austria from 1964 to 1965. He taught at the University of Salzburg, Austria from 1970-1971 where he served at a professor English and chairman of the American Studies program. Hillway founded the Herman Melville Society and served as secretary from 1945-1959 and as president in 1960. He was a leader in the junior college movement and was in Who's Who in America. His poems were published in "The Best Poems of the '90s" in 1996. He authored many books and textbooks including Introduction to Research (1956), American Two-Year College (1958), Education in American Society (1961), Herman Melville (1963), Handbook of Educational Research (1969), and A Century of Higher Education (1962). Tyrus Hillway passed away on August 1, 1998 in Longmont, Colorado.

Tyrus Hillway collection of Herman Melville materials
The collection contains research on Melville, including essays, major themes, Hollywood's part, much information on Moby-Dick; and an edition of Mardi, by Herman Melville.
