Scope and Contents

Gates at several of the entrances on campus were gifts of various graduating classes. The Francis Parker Gates, located at the corner of 9th Avenue and 17th Street, were gifts of the Class of 1902. The gates were located approximately where the the Frasier Hall circle drive is currently located and were inscribed with the class motto "Know thyself." Francis Wayland Parker (1837-1902) was honored as "a leader in educational method." The Horace Mann Gates, located at 10th Avenue and 18th Street, were gifts of the Class of 1910. They are currently located at the entrance to Cranford Park and were inscribed with the class motto "Rowing not drifting." Horace Mann (1796-1859) was honored as "a leader in educational administration." The William T. Harris Gates, located at 8th Avenue and 17th Street, were designed by Robert Ewing Stiffler (Class of 1912, PdM degree in Manual Training) and were a gift of the Class of 1912. William Torrey Harris (1835-1909) was honored as "a leader in educational philosophy." Source: "Dedication of the Campus Gates," Alumni Courier, vol.
