University Center (Student Union), 1965-
Scope and Contents
The College Center opened in 1965. It was the second building constructed on the West Campus. The Judy Farr Center (middle photo) was one of the buildings moved so that the College Center could be built. The College Center was renamed the University Center in 1970 and was also known as the "plastic Taj Mahal" or the "white elephant on the hill." It wasn't until after the major remodel of the University Center in 1988 that the facility received the heavy student usage for which it was designed. The atrium and updated cafeteria and dining spaces went far to accomplish this change. A bomb threat and a student takeover of the University Center ocurred on Saturday, April 13, 1974.
