Biographical / Historical

The Colorado Bandmasters Association was formed in 1965 by John Shaw, George Rhoads, Don Smith and a small group of band directors who met while attending the Colorado Music Educators Convention Meeting. Upon creation, officers were elected and a board of directors was formed to recruit chamber members. The Executive Secretary, Don Smith, was responsible for much of the initial organization development as well as the planning and organization of the first state convention.

The goal of the Colorado Bandmasters Association was to provide the region with opportunities for bands to develop and improve through education by way of seminars and clinics and to generate enthusiasm throughout the Colorado academic band community. Although the CBA encountered initial opposition from the Colorado Music Educators Association including possible sabotoge of the original convention location, their first convention proved successful and was one of the most extensive ever.

Colorado Bandmasters Association continues to offer educational opportunities for students and educators through the annual convention as well as with various clinics, festivals, and performances throughout the year. The organization has grown to provide additional opportunities for concert bands and marching bands as well as an all-state jazz band which requires students to audition for admittance.
