Historical Note
In its original formation in the 1940's, the Counseling Center was under the Department of Student Personnel and provided “counseling of a personal nature.” As early as 1959, the Counseling Center sought out minority counselors to better aid minority students. The Counseling Center has had many locations, moving to the highest areas of student traffic as the University of Northern Colorado expanded. Previous locations were Cranford 103 (1965), McKee 213 (1983), Gordon Hall (1989), Grey Hall (unknown date), and Cassidy Hall as of 2021. The Counseling Center employed qualified individuals to assist students in dealing with a wide variety of problems in a confidential manner, operating under the ethical code of both the American Psychological Association and the American Personnel and Guidance Association. The Center provided personal problem counseling, career planning, academic planning, marriage counseling, personality and vocational testing, and help with study and testing skills. Any student enrolled in at least one course at UNC could utilize these services. Previous directors of the Counseling Center consisted of, but were not limited to, Earl Zwetschke (1957), Ted Nelson (circa 1965), Dave Smart (unknown date), and Jeanne Miller (circa 1993). Jeanne Miller prioritized expanding the counseling staff to mitigate wait times for students in immediate need of assistance.
