Biographical or Historical Information
In 1994, Neil Douglas Argo was an Honored Alumnus of the University of Northern Colorado. At that time, he donated materials to the School of Music for use in teaching a new course on film scoring. These materials remained housed and in use at various times by the School of Music until July 2001 when they were transferred from the School of Music to the UNC Music Library for Mr. Argo's use and for inventory as a permanent gift to the University, to be preserved for use in the Archives located in Michener Library. Additional materials were donated in 2003. Neil Argo studied piano and percussion as a child. After graduating from high school, Argo joined the United States Air Force and became a member of the North American Air Defense Band. Following military duty, Argo attended the University of North Texas, where he studied jazz and majored in music composition. As a master's student at the University of Northern Colorado, Argo continued his interest in jazz and contemporary music by "composing, orchestrating and conducting for various sized ensembles." After meeting Marty Stouffer, he was invited to write the main theme for the PBS series Wild America. In addition, he underscored many of the episodes. One of the episodes, Born to Run, Won the Gold Award at the 27th Annual International Film and Television Festival of New York. The PBS series ran for 15 years and is still in syndication through Paramount Television. Argo also wrote the scores for Zebulon Pike and the Blue Mountains. Argo scored and/or orchestrated for several television shows including The Colbys, Hotel, The New Mission Impossible, Beverly Hills 90210, Hearts are Wild, Melrose Place, and Burke's Law. He also provided film scoring for The Cat Story, The Laureate, Floating World, and Un Incontro / An Encounter. He also provided scores for Survivors of the Skeleton Coast, a National Geographic Special, as well as Skeleton Coast Safari for ITEL. He has also taught orchestration at California State University at Northridge and been a guest lecturer at many colleges and universities. As a member of the Media Task Force at Biola University, Argo conducts seminars in music composition. His professional memberships include Society of Composers and Lyricists in Los Angeles, the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, and the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.
