Historical Note

Originally opened in 1889 as the "State Normal School", UNC has a rich history of student involvement and student activities. Much of the student activities history is documented in photographs and first hand accounts/documents. Some of the highlights from this collection include photographs and materials relating to the BYU Wrestling Protests and UNC student protests relating to the Kent State and Jackson State tragedies in 1970. In 1967, UNC students from the BSU (Black Student Union) staged a protest against the BYU (Brigham-Young University) Wrestling match at UNC. They were protesting the Mormon practice of dicrimination against African Americans and the racist policies of the Mormon church at the time. In 1970, in response to the tragedies of the Kent State shooting and shortly thereafter, the Jackson State shooting, UNC students went on strike at the university. Many students also went on a lobby trip to downtown Denver to speak to state legislators at the State Capitol, and other students went all the way to Washington DC to speak to the Colorado representitive in Congress to influence change. These protests also coinsided with the Vietnam War era, and so many students led petitions that were also in opposition of war and violence. Another highlight of this collection is the student handbooks that range from 1904 to 1983. These were published by administration as a way to provide freshmen and new UNC students with a reference guide for navigating campus, contacting services, and other information about college. There are also many newspapers in the collection that have circulated around UNC for the last 100+ years. These newspapers, such as "The Mirror", "Totem", and "Prospectus", helped to keep students and other members of the university up to date on the latest events happening in Greeley.
