Scope and Contents

The Detroit Publishing Company Photochrom Collection is composed of 766 photochroms depicting various locations and landmarks in North American landmarks, dating primarily from 1898 to 1908 with the bulk falling between 1898 and 1902. Many of them were taken by William Henry Jackson, an American photographer and explorer, with the rest being taken by other photographers working for the Detroit Publishing Company. All of the photochroms were produced by the Detroit Publishing company.

Detroit Publishing Company

The Detroit Photographic Company began in the late 1890’s by William A. Livingstone, Jr. and Edwin H. Husher, in 1905 the company became The Detroit Publishing Company. Between 1895 and 1924 it was one of the major image publishers in the world. The company produced prints of landscapes and city scenes across North America.

Arrangement

This collection is organized into three series:

Series 1 - Regular size photochroms

Series 2 - Mounted photochroms

Series 3 - Panoramic photochroms

Images are arranged by size then according to their number from the Detroit Publishing company catalog.
