Historical Note
The Center for Women’s and Gender Equity at the University of Northern Colorado was originally established in 1994 as the Women’s Resource Center to support and advocate for women on campus. Melanie Wilson was appointed as the Center’s first director in December 1994. Initially housed within the Sociology Department in Candelaria Hall, the Center later relocated to McKee Hall before moving into its permanent home, Scott-Willcoxon Hall, which was constructed in 1999 specifically for the Center.
Scott-Willcoxon Hall was named in honor of Marcia Willcoxon, founder of the Women’s Studies Program at UNC in 1974, and Nancy Scott, former Vice President of Student Affairs.
The Center’s early mission emphasized improving the status of women on campus, promoting diversity, facilitating networking opportunities, enhancing safety, and fostering awareness of gender-related issues. In 2018, the Center adopted its current name, the Center for Women’s and Gender Equity, to reflect a broader and more inclusive commitment to addressing inequities across all gender identities
