The Errol L. Uys Papers include correspondence, manuscript pages, research relating to the development of The Covenant, newspaper and periodical clippings concerning the development and international reacrtion to The Covenant, and works of study on The Covenant and the collabotation between Uys and Michener. The strength of the collecion is found with the manuscripts and research relating to the development of The Covenant.

The collection is organized into the following series:

The research series contain material relating to the development of The Covenant’s plot including timelines, family trees, and reference material, research reports and chapter outlines.

The manuscript series contain several drafts of various sections of the book including examples of Errol L. Uys contribution to the storyline, James A. Michener’s final revised draft and copies of early drafts of the author’s note and dedication.

The reader’s reports are chapters of The Covenant edited by Errol L. Uys, Philip C. Bateman and several other individuals who are experts in their respected field for factual content. This series contains the edited chapters and the editors’ supporting research.

The correspondence series range from 1978 to 2008 and includes correspondence to and from Errol L. Uys, James A. Michener, other members of the Reader Digest staff including Philip C. Bateman and Fulton Oursler, Jr., Nadia Orapchuck, Albert Erskine and other individuals relating to the development and publishing of Michener’s The Covenant and Uys’s experiences during and after his work on The Covenant arranged by date.

The newspaper clippings and periodical article series range from 1972 to 1980 and include clippings and articles from various newspapers and periodicals in the United States and South Africa relating to the early development of The Covenant, the book’s reception after publication and the book’s banning in South Africa arranged by date and language.

Uys working papers are various documents relating to The Covenant after its publication including the doctoral thesis of Barbara Helly entitled The Covenant by James A. Michener, a popular American historical novel on the history of South Africa, chapter 16 of Stephen J. May’s book Michener, A Writer’s Journey, a personal notebook of Uys containing notes and extensive commentary relating to Michener and The Covenant. Also included are a printed copy of Uys’s website http://www.erroluys.com, a photocopy of the register of James A. Michener’s papers at Swarthmore College, and correspondence from Uys to Helly, May and the University of Northern Colorado.
