Collection Scope and Contents

This collection consists of UNC Board of Trustee Meeting minutes and materials on trustees from 1889-2017. Material in the collection also includes information and documents on past and current board members. The bylaws, rules, regulations, and policies for the trustees are also included along with reports created for and by the Board of Trustees, and budgets approved by the Trustees. It also includes one letter from L.T. Bromwell, Librarian 1895-1896.

Organizational History

The terms for the first Board of Trustees began in April of 1889. In 1973, legislation provided for a separate board for UNC with trustee terms beginning July 1st. Prior to this, there had been one Board of Trustees for the College's multiple locations in Greeley, Alamosa, and Gunnison. During this time, members of the Board of Trustees included local residents from each location. After the change in legislation, the University of Northern Colorado Board of Trustees held its first meeting in May of 1973. Beginning on July 1, 1975, a studen trustee was added to the Board. This position would be filled by a full time junior or senior student at UNC and elected to the posistion by the student body. The student trustee would be a non-voting position on the board. Beginning on July 1, 1981, a faculty trustee was added to the board. This position would be filled by a faculty member of UNC and would be elected at large by members of the faculty. The faculty trustee would be a non-voting position on the board. As of 2018 the current make up consists of nine members total. Seven of the members are appointed by the State Governor and serve four year terms. The other two members include a faculty trustee and a student trustee.

Acquisition Information

Acquisition information for much of this collection is unknown. The UNC Board of Trustees transferred materials in 2006, 2010, 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018; the UNC President's Office transferred materials in 2009. Embossers/seals transferred from RG009-S002 (UNC Registrar and Records) in June 2020. The Colorado State Archives deaccessioned six bound volumes of original Trustees meeting minutes and transferred these in November 2021.

Separated Materials

The reel-to-reel audio tape of George Houston's memoirs was transferred to UNC motion pictures and audio tapes, RG021-S003 in October 2021.
