Collection Scope and Contents

This collection documents Faculty Senate and its predecessors; committees of the Senate and constituted by the Senate; ad-hoc committees on various governance issues; faculty-constituted governance Councils and Boards; and groups related to the faculty as a whole.

Faculty Senate minutes, agendas and supporting documents (1925-1985) can be found in this collection. It also includes senate actions such as votes and approvals from the 1960s-2007. It contains various minutes, agendas, reports, and documents from the following committees and councils: Academic Policies Committee, 1965-2010 Codification Committee, 1983-2010 Committee on Promotion, Tenure, and Sabbatic Criteria, 1975-1977 Committee on Research, 1970-1986 Curriculum Committee, 1954-2003 Elections Committee, 1964-2010 Emeritus Faculty, 1990s-2013 Executive Committee, 1966-2010 Faculty Club, 1917-1963 Faculty Council, 1964-1965 Faculty Dames and Women's Association, 1962-1987 Faculty Research and Publications Board, 1986-1996 General Education Council, 1994-1996, 2001-2002, 2005-2006 Legislative Committee, 1969-1988 Research Committee, 1918-1924 Salary Audit Committee, 1966-1992 Salary Equity Committee, 1992-2010 Undergraduate Council, 1977-2010 Welfare Committee, 1965-2000 and 2005-2010

A small portion of this collection relates to miscellaneous faculty organizations, 1911-1992 and 2010-2017.

It also contains the Faculty Senate newsletter, "Faculty Senate Forum," 1984-2010. It has various iterations of the faculty handbook, policy manuals, Codification, faculty constitution, and regulations and procedures written by or related to the UNC faculty. There can also be found reception and award programs (1990s-2000s), AAUP materials, New Faculty Orientation (2005), teaching/change requests, information pertaining to faculty projects, and evaluation documents (1940-1976).

Faculty Senate documents accumulated and donated by Rick Silverman are also part of this collection. These date from the 1990s to early 2000s.

Box RG05-S4.025 is completely unprocessed and may contain restricted materials. Please contact the Archives and Special Collections in advance to request access.

Boxes RG05-S4.029, RG05-S4.030, RG05-S4.031, RG05-S4.032, and RG05-Faculty.005 are restricted due to the presence of confidential information.

Acquisition Information

Codification Committee material transferred by Mary Schuttler in 2011; Faculty Senate Minutes transferred by the Faculty Senate Office in 2015, 2016 and by the Office of the President in 2018; Library administration collected and transfered material for this collection in 2016. Rick Silverman materials donated by Silverman in 2015. Files regarding faculty senate committees were transferred from RG007-S001 to this collection in November 2020. One document tranferred from UNC Office of the Registrar records (RG008-S005) in June 2021 (box RG005.007). General Education Council materials transferred from Tom Trelogan’s office on January 20, 2021. Donna Lakin donated Emeritus/Faculty Dames materials on 6/22/2021. Catherine Clark donated one Faculty Dinner program, May 15, 2019. Annie Epperson transfered material in September 2021. Much of the collection was acquired prior to 1996, acquisition dates and information unknown.
