Collection Scope and Contents

Collection consists of materials relating to the UNC School of Music and units associated with the school. Materials in the collection include the degrees offered, past performances and events, posters promoting the school's programs, brochures for opera, the Choral Aires, and programs, regalia for graduates of the program, plaques for achievements by members of the school, and quarterly publications titled, "Quarterly Journal of Music Teaching and Learning" published by the School of Music between 1990 and 1997.

Organizational History

The Choral Aires were organized in 1954 from the best ensemble and solo singers of Colorado State College. Professor Claude Schmitz served as director of the choir which also toured Korea and Japan in addition to Colorado.

Acquisition Information

Acquisition #48 received from the College of Music on April 25, 2006. Acquisition #14.10 was transferred from the Music Department via Stephen Luttmann, Music Librarian, on March 24, 2014. The Skinner Music Library sent a memorial program in 2018. Donna Lakin donated two items in 2021. Acquisition information for the remainder of the collection is unknown.

Digitized Materials

Two reel-to-reel tapes were digitized in 2020 and will be made available to the public in Digital UNC. Archives employees can access the digital files on the Archives' SharePoint site and external hard drive #4 (Haku).

The former identifier number for this collection was RG007-S009MUS. It was changed in January 2018 during the RG collection management project for the purpose of consistent identifier numbers.
