Organizational History

The Little Theatre of the Rockies was established at the Colorado State Teachers College in 1934 as an educational summer stock company on campus. Helen Langworthy developed the program and served as Director from its inception until her retirement in 1965. Welby Wolfe took over as Executive Director from 1965 to 1970, followed by John Willcoxon, 1970-1985. Tom McNally was named Artistic Director in 1988, and David Grapes became LTR Producer in 2005. Shelly Gaza was named Interim Producing Artistic Director upon David Grapes’ retirement in 2019. The Little Theatre of the Rockies suspended productions during World War II and the 2020 Coronavirus Pandemic but has otherwise been in continual operation since 1934, earning the distinction of being the oldest professional theatre company in the State of Colorado.

Abstract

This collection primarily contains photographic images but also includes clippings, correspondence, and historical documentation pertaining to the Little Theatre of the Rockies.

Acquisition Information

In April 2006, two linear feet of materials including photographs, clippings, and correspondence related to the Little Theatre of the Rockies were transferred to the Archives from the UNC College of Performing and Visual Arts (Acq#45). In 2012, seven boxes of CDs containing images of LTR productions were received from the Langworthy Theatre Lobby Box Office. In 2011, Susan Nelson of PVA transferred additional slides, photographs, and negatives (acq# 11.20). In April 2016, photographic images contained in envelopes and albums and on CDs were received from Diane Cays of PVA (acq# 16.07).

There is evidence indicating that many of the photographs and programs in this collection were originally part of scrapbooks created by Helen Langworthy. George Bogusch referenced her scrapbooks in his 1960 thesis “The Little Theatre of the Rockies; 1934-1960 : a Pattern for Educational Theatre; “ however, the whereabouts of the scrapbooks has long remained unknown. It appears that Dr. Langworthy’s scrapbooks were disassembled at some point and combined with other individual LTR items prior to being donated to Archives and Special Collections.

In 1979, former guest artist John Courtney wrote to John Willcoxon, LTR director, offering “a box of programs, pictures, publicity and revues of LTR plays since the theatre opened in ’33 or ‘34” to the theater department. As noted on the original letter, Dr. Willcoxon responded to Mr. Courtney, but whether he accepted the photos and all, is unknown. Considering the number and variety of images of Mr. Courtney in the collection, we can assume his donation was accepted and has been incorporated into this archival collection.

The UNC College of Performing Arts, Theatre Arts office transferred programs, promotional materials, and photographs in December 2020. Shan Watkins donated programs in 2021.

Separated Materials

Photographic images of annual dance programs were moved to RG021-S001, University of Northern Colorado Photographic Prints and Negatives.

In December 2020, CDs containing digital images of dance performances, annual Galas, and music performances were transferred to UNC Performing and Visual Arts records (RG007-S045).

A 1959 program for the St. Louis Municipal Opera production of The King and I starring Anthony Dexter (aka Walter Craig) was transferred to the Walter Craig papers (SC124) in December 2020. The program is signed by Dexter to Helen Langworthy. Presumably, the program was originally in Langworthy's scrapbooks which were disassembled prior to the materials being donated to the Archives.
