Organizational History

The Ronald E. McNair Post-baccalaureate Achievement Program (McNair Scholars Program) was founded as a federal TRIO program designed to provide undergraduate students with effective preparation for graduate-level study through research and scholarly activities, summer internships, seminars and workshops, mentoring, and assistance with graduate school admission processes. McNair participants are either first-generation college students with financial need or members of a group traditionally underrepresented in graduate education, and have demonstrated strong academic potential.

The McNair Scholars program at the University of Northern Colorado was established in 1995, and as of 2018 is the longest-running program in Colorado. It was originally part of the Center for Human Enrichment until 2002. From 2002-2004 it was under the Office of Multicultural Affairs, and in 2005 it came under the Center for Honors, Scholars, and Leadership.
