Biography

Miss Hazel E. Johnson was born August 30, 1902, to Benjamin and Cora Belle (Jeet) Johnson in Leon, [Oklahoma?]. Her family moved to Fountain, Colorado in 1918. After graduating from Fountain High School, she attended Blair's Business College in Colorado Springs, Colorado. She worked at the First National Bank in Fountain and for the clerk in Springfield, Colorado. She came to Greeley in 1938 as an employee of the Colorado State Revenue Department. Hazel E. Johnson wrote over "1,000 newspaper columns about Greeley and Weld County history." She wrote an "Out of the Past" column in The Greeley Journal for twenty years and contributed articles to the Christian Science Monitor and Senior Voice. In addition, she gave numerous presentations to local clubs and organizations. Hazel E. Johnson established an annual history award at the University of Northern Colorado for the "Best Paper on Colorado History." The Hazel E. Johnson Research Center is now located in the new Greeley History Museum. Hazel E. Johnson participated in many local organizations, including: Regional vice president of the Colorado State Historical Society; Member of the Greeley Museum Board for the first five years of the board's existence; President of the Greeley Business and Professional Women's Club; American Association of Retired Persons; Knife and Fork Club; South Platte Valley Historical Society; Weld County Historical Society; Delta Kappa Gamma, both local and state; Friends of the University of Northern Colorado Libraries; Friends of the Greeley Museums; Friends of the Greeley Public Library. Hazel E. Johnson received many honors, including: One of the first three individuals inducted into the Senior Hall of Fame; Parade Marshall for the 1975 Greeley Independence Stampede; "Certificate of Commendation" from the American Association of State and Local History; "Community Service" award from the Mayor of Greeley; "Outstanding Centennial Citizen" award from the Governor of Colorado; "Medal of Honor" from the Daughters of the American Revolution.
