Gray Hall, 1916-
Scope and Contents
Gray Hall, completed in 1916, was originally known as the Women's Club House. The club house was used for "social campus functions." Gray Hall is named for Thomas J. Gray, the University's first president. In 1927 the reception room had a grand piano at one end of the room and "a spacious davenport before an open fireplace" at the other end. The basement had a modern kitchen, a dining room, and a "grotto" for small groups who wanted to hold dances. The club house also had a new reading room organized by graduate students. It was remodeled and renamed the Student Union in 1939. The interior of the Women's Club House now serves as the office for the University's Parking Services. The popular student cafe, the Bru Inn, was located in the west wing of the Student Union. It was named in honor of the school mascot, the bear. The Counseling and Testing Center (also known as the Counseling and Career Center) was located in Room 103 in Gray Hall from 1971-1972 to 1982-1983. During the 1983-1984 school year, Parking Services and the Campus Police moved into Gray Hall.
