Organizational History

James A. Michener Library art exhibits began in 1973. The purpose of the exhibits is to add another learning dimension for students, enhance the Library through art, and provide exposure and publicity for artists. Community involvement is also a factor, and invitations are circulated to a wide audience. The Friends of the UNC Libraries support the exhibits. They purchased the panels and track lights for the Corridor Gallery west and south of the Library's administrative suite. The Friends host the receptions and provide refreshments. The cost of beverages is provided by the UNC Foundation. Items exhibited are insured by the University. The artists are responsible for delivery and dismantling of their work. In 1995, the main gallery in the southeast corner of the main floor was dedicated as the "Mari Michener Gallery" in memory of James A. Michener's wife. The third gallery space is on the outer walls of the mezzanine. Wall space in the lower level ceased to be used for exhibits when staff was transferred from the area. Exhibit cases presented to the library by Professor Emeritus A. M. Winchester are used, as well as several owned by the Library. There are door-sized portable panels for hanging smaller items. The Exhibits Coordinator develops the exhibit schedule, usually months in advance, works with the Information Service on copy for announcements, develops publicity for use in local, University and area newspapers, hangs and dismantles the exhibits, and coordinates the receptions.
