Final first draft
Scope and Contents
"The final first draft, fully edited and collated. It is this that I send to Nadia, through the mails. My curious habit of pasting additions to pages stems from the fact that when I draft a chapter the very first time, I generate a tremendous kinesthetic sense, so that I know exactly where page 17 is, how it looks, what is on it, and how it relates to other pages. Were I, in retyping, to lose that eidetic numbering system I would feel badly thrown off balance; so as far as possible I like to retain each original page numbering, altering and adding to it as required. Occasionally I am not able to retain the original system, but when I deviate it is almost always to my detriment. "My final first draft looks very sloppy, and it is. But it is also a working draft, on which I have scratched out and added to constantly, until it has grown like a healthy tree. This is where I have done my work, and I do not think I could change my working habits at this late date, merely in the interest of neatness. "My secretary keeps a magnifying glass to decipher my notes. I print them because I cannot myself read my hurried handwriting and sometimes not even my carefully studied one. THESE DRAFTS MUST NOT BE OPEN TO THE PUBLIC UNTIL TWO YEARS AFTER PUBLICATION DATE."
