James Wilcox's editing
Scope and Contents
"Erskine has a young assistant editor named James Wilcox, from Yale and with a sharp eye for detail. Because this manuscript was so fragmented, Erskine wanted some one extra person to read for comprehension and consistency. Wilcox proved invaluable in asking the nagging questions that readers often ask, and thanks to his acute vision we clarified many points which were quite clear to me, but because of my predilection for ellipsis---I really like it and the stylistic modification it permits---he was especially helpful in pointing out spots in which my mind jumped ahead much faster than my typewriter. He also had a most prosaic approach, and many of my intimations missed him, as they would probably have missed the ordinary reader. Almost always I understood his apprehensions, and whereas I stuck fast to some of my stylistic inventions, I was quite ready to discard others when he showed me that they weren't really working."
