The fountain was built over what was at one time an artesian well. Stones in the fountain came from General Palmer's estate near Colorado Springs.  Pioneers also donated a stone from the Mammoth Cave, ores from England and Africa, shells from Maine, an Indian feed grinder, a large jardinere and a petrified snake.  At one time a gazebo stood over the fountain but was later moved to Island Grove Park.
