Collection Scope and Contents Note

Gary B. Morgan served as the Sports Information Director at the University of Northern Colorado from 1968 to 1977. This collection includes materials related to his book, "Sugar Tramp: Colorado’s Great Western Railway," which he authored. Included are the book's cover page, photographs of trains, correspondence, research on the Great Western Railway and Sugar Company, proofs and edits of the manuscript, and the complete rough manuscript. Additionally, there is a dummy layout with illustrations and photo arrangements, several half-tone negatives, maps, and a set of six audio tapes from Western interviews. There are also four tapes featuring Lindsey Ashby's interview about railroads.

Furthermore, the collection contains two other books written by Gary B. Morgan: "Three Foot Rails: A Quick History of the Colorado Central Railroad" and "Rails around the Loop: The Story of the Georgetown Loop." For these books, the collection includes rough drafts, gallery proofs, edits, and manuscripts, along with related research and correspondence. Lastly, there is an unidentified manuscript, which may be all or part of "Stairways to the Stars: Colorado’s Argentine Central Railway."

Biography

Gary B. Morgan was born in San Diego, California on November 5, 1943. He attended the University of San Diego for two years and then transferred to New Mexico Highlands University, where he received a bachelor’s degree in English-Journalism in 1966. While at Highlands, he served as assistant sports information director for a year and then as director for another year. Morgan served as a graduate teaching assistant and assistant sports information director at Colorado State University and received a master’s degree in English in 1968.

Morgan served as sports information director at the University of Northern Colorado from 1968-1977. He held leadership positions in the College Sports Information Directors of America (COSIDA) and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.

His poetry was published in Western Humanities Review, Seared Eye, Nova, Mosaic, Kauri, Encore, Jean’s Journal, and other publications.
