James A. Michener Society records
Scope and Contents
The University of Northern Colorado (UNC) became the respository for the records of the James A. Michener Society when the initial collection was gifted to UNC Archival Services in 2000. The James A. Michener Society Records contains correspondence, financial records, membership, newsletter, newspaper clippings, photographs, annual conference packages, and other materials related to the history of the organization.

Historical Note: James A. Michener Society
Formed in the fall of 1998, the James A. Michener Society brings together individuals with the common interest of the life and work of James A. Michener. The purpose of the society is to “preserve the intellectual legacy of James A. Michener as a writer, teacher, historian, public servant, patriot and philanthropist; ensure the future generations have full access to all his writings; promote the exchange of ideas and information about his writings; encourage fellowship among readers of his writings; and inform devotees and members of the Society about recent publications and critique of his writings.”

James A. Michener Society Records contains correspondence, financial records, membership, newsletter, newspaper clippings, photographs, annual conference packages, and other materials related to the history of the organization.
Arrangement
This collection is organized into the following series:
Series 1: James A. Michener and his legacy
Articles and writings about James A. Michener and his writings, the James A. Michener Society’s beginning and events, and the James A. Michener Library and Special Collections from 1961-2012.
Series 2: Development of the James A. Michener Society
Correspondence, meeting minutes, and other material relating to the formation and development of the James A. Michener Society and the society’s first annual meeting.
Series 3: President Records
Correspondence, meeting minutes, and other material created or gathered by the individuals during their term as President of the Society.
Series 4: Secretary/Treasurer Records
Financial records, correspondence, meeting minutes, and other material created or gathered by the individuals during their term as Secretary/Treasurer of the Society.
Series 5: Membership
Membership brochures, applications, and directories along with correspondence of potential members.
Series 6: Historian Records
Records relating to the on-going activities and ruling of the society collected by the Society Historian including correspondence, agendas, meeting minutes, reports, and material relating to the annual meetings.
Series 7: Newsletter Editor Records
Correspondence, documents and photographs for the newsletter, and newsletter notes created or gathered by the newsletter editor during their term.
Series 8: James A. Michener Society Newsletters
Four copies of every newsletter published by the James A. Michener Society, 1999-2012.
Series 9: Society Annual Meetings
Registration forms, meeting agendas, meetings packets, and photographs relating to the annual meetings of the James A. Michener Society.
Series 10: James A. Michener Society Memorabilia
Physical Characteristics and Technical Requirements
Special equipment are required to view or access some materials, particularly audiovisual material and records in electronic form. Required equipment includes a VHS player, DVD/CD-Rom Drive (reader), and floppy disk reader.
Separated Materials
T-shirts from the Opening Day Celebration of the James A. Michener Special Collection, 1998 September 11, were removed from collection as these T-shirt were not paid for by the James A. Michener Society. Published works, James A. Michener by A. Grove Day and Talking with Michener by Lawrence Grobel, removed from the collection in October 2015.
