Collection Scope and Contents

This collection contains photographs and negatives of the University of Northern Colorado since its founding. It includes images of board members, faculty, staff, and students; buildings and campus scenes; events such as commencement and homecoming; athletics; and student activities such as students in classes and studying, performances, alumni, Lab School, and dorm life. Formats are largely black and white prints; however, there are also 35mm negatives, contact sheets, and reproductions and photocopies on paper.

Identifying marks on the back of some photos include: 1. Names of photographic studios: Aerial Photograph Service, Dallas, Texas - Many photographs of the central campus. May 1940 Baker, F. E., Photographer and View Artist - Advertisement in the Crucible. October 1900 Gardner Studio, Greeley, Colorado -- Gunter Hall T. E. Helgeson, Photographer - Presidents' 1st home Martin, Robert E., 915 16th Street, Greeley - Advertisement in 1935 Cache la Poudre & Old Library, 1906-37 Riley's Studio, 916 8th Avenue, Greeley, Colorado - Gunter Hall, Faculty apartments, Kepner Hall. Abstract

This collection contains photographs and negatives of the University of Northern Colorado since its founding. Included are images of people, buildings, events, campus scenes, classrooms, athletics, and more.

Acquisition Information

The University's Office of News and Publications transferred most of these photographs and negatives, dates unknown. A selection of photographs and negatives was receieved from William Hartman, UNC Journalism Professor, in 1987. Some items were found loose in an envelope labeled "Copies Center thru Ross Annex - night." The original envelope dated 1975 January 28 from Ken's Camera, 1513 8th Avenue, Greeley, Colorado, had Eric Lundberg's name on the front of the envelope. The back of the envelope was stamped "Publications Office received Sept 05 1980 by CS. Eric Lundberg was the director of the UNC News Service. Some images documenting UNC Athletics transfered by the Sports Information Director in 2003. The Office of Alumni Relations transferred seven images which used to hang in the Judy Farr Center, added in January 2021.

Processing Note

SC-SHC-04 - Sports History Photograph Collection; SC-SPAR - Sports Archive Photograph Collection (SPAR); and photographs from SC-SPHC - Sports Media Records Series were merged into this collection during the Record Group Collection Management Project, March 2018. These items were physically integrated into RG021-S001 several years ago. SRW, 03/21/18

Identifying and estimating the dates of the photographs in the absence of explicit information was done on the basis of the following pieces of evidence: 1. Gardens, trees and shrubs, their presence/absence, condition, maturity, location, etc. 2. People who could be identified 3. Furnishings, benches, towers, poles, signage, vehicles, etc. 4. Surrounding structures 5. Similarities in the physical development of photographs: yellowing, margins, size, clarity, finishing, coloring 6. Special weather conditions: storms, cloud formations 7. Known events: fires, protests, graduations, presentations 8. Building features added or removed during remodeling: stairs, flooring, art works

Variant Identifier Number

The previous identifier number for the bulk of this collection was RG003-S020. Photographs and negatives were moved to RG021-S001 circa 2016 with the intent to put all UNC photographs and negatives into this collection.
