Manuscript editing by Bert Krantz
Scope and Contents
"A very important batch of papers showing in detail how I responded to editorial questions raised in the manuscript stage of our work by Bert Krantz. She has a sharp eye and a very classical approach to language. In fact, she is so severe in her questioning and in her drive for grammatical accuracy and philosophical meaning that I have made two comments about her: (1) 'I'd just love to watch you editing James Joyce,' and (2) 'The world would be a lot better off if you'd been given the job of editing Revelations. I can hear you now. "What golden trumpet? You said eleven lambs. Where did the voice come from? Did they go to war or didn't they go to war...just tell me real simple facts."' She is a splendid editor and has the nasty habit of returning to something in galleys and then in page proof and finally in foundry. She never takes no for an answer, and I can see her now, when I'm back in Bucks County, blue penciling the foundry and saying, 'We'll just fix it anyway.' She is especially death on any fancy or illusory writing, and my predilection for truncated lines of thought, ellipsis and foreshortening drives her nuts. The penciled corrections on the galley are the ones she and I agreed to."
