Manuscript editing by Bert Krantz

 Sub-Series — Box: JM001 Box 5, Folder: 135
Identifier: Sub-Series I.18
Scope and Contents "A very important batch of papers showing in detail how I responded to editorial questions raised in the manuscript stage of our work by Bert Krantz. She has a sharp eye and a very classical approach to language. In fact, she is so severe in her questioning and in her drive for grammatical accuracy and philosophical meaning that I have made two comments about her: (1) 'I'd just love to watch you editing James Joyce,' and (2) 'The world would be a lot better off if you'd been given the job of...

Sample pages of typesetting

 Sub-Series — Box: JM001 Box 5, Folder: 136
Identifier: Sub-Series I.19
Scope and Contents "Sample pages based on various selected passages from the manuscript. It is hoped that if every possible kind of type-setting problem is represented in these sample pages, then the setting of the manuscript into type will become fairly simple. This time the selectors did a great job, and we found almost no unsolved problems when we came to marking the manuscript for the printer. It is interesting, however, that whereas I was most meticulous in preparing the manuscript and even more careful...

Master galley proof

 Sub-Series — Box: JM001 Box 5, Folder: 137
Identifier: Sub-Series I.20
Scope and Contents "Master galley proof, kept in the office of Albert Erskine, and edited in great detail by him with consultation by me. No alteration is made on this galley without my approval, and most are made in my specific words, except where raw error is involved. From Erskine this set of galleys goes to Bert Krantz, who is the final arbiter on style, and she is permitted to change raw error on her own recognizance. Almost all the changes, however, are made after long consultations with me. It is this...

Duplicate set galleys edited by Michener, Erskine and Krantz

 Sub-Series — Box: JM001 Box 5, Folder: 138
Identifier: Sub-Series I.21
Scope and Contents

"Duplicate set of galleys sent to me by Erskine and kept in my possession during the long process of editing. I work on these at home--in this case in Mexico and the Dominican Republic, too--and then take my set into Erskine's office, where my corrections are correlated with his. Then we hand both sets to Bert Krantz, who is responsible for bringing all corrections into line with our style sheets. She also identifies errors to be corrected in the narrative itself."

Changes made to fit cast metal lines

 Sub-Series — Box: JM001 Box 5, Folder: 140
Identifier: Sub-Series I.23
Scope and Contents "These work pages show how I devise solutions to single-word or brief changes required by either error or infelicity in the galleys. Resetting costs are abominable these days, and if the author introduces a new word at the beginning of a paragraph he causes the entire paragraph of many lines to be reset, and the charge is levied on him. It is therefore to his interest to make only such changes---except where raw error is involved---as can be fitted into the rigorous limitations of the...

Single galleys edited by Michener

 Sub-Series — Box: JM001 Box 5, Folder: 139
Identifier: Sub-Series I.22
Scope and Contents

"While working with either Erskine or Krantz I sometimes take single galleys home with me to spend substantial time trying to unravel errors and contradictions, and to make substantial changes that we have agreed upon. I am not good at revising in a hurry or with someone else watching."

Materials used by cartographer Jean-Paul Tremblay

 Sub-Series — Box: JM001 Box 5, Folder: 141
Identifier: Sub-Series I.24
Scope and Contents "Materials used by the cartographer Jean-Paul Tremblay, who has contributed brilliantly to several of my books. I like his work very much indeed, and keep him in mind when I am laying out the map-work for my books. I know that if I can visualize it in my own mind, Tremblay can transfer that concept onto the printed page. We work closely, but Erskine or Krantz usually finds something that must be corrected, for cartographers are lousy spellers. Tremblay is no exception but his maps are the...

Master page proof, corrections inserted by Krantz

 Sub-Series — Box: JM001 Box 5, Folder: 142-144
Identifier: Sub-Series I.25
Scope and Contents

"Master page proof, with all corrections inserted by Bert Krantz. I am often present when these changes are made, but the job is hers primarily and she does it. When she finally signs the last page proof, the printer is free to proceed with the casting of plates."

Master page proof, again by Krantz

 Sub-Series — Box: JM001 Box 5, Folder: 145
Identifier: Sub-Series I.26
Scope and Contents

"Master plate proof, which is again handled only by Bert Krantz. There is still time for last-minute corrections, costly though they are, and if needed they are made. When Bert signs the last plate proof, the printer is free to proceed with printing of the book."
